Vehicle Mileage Allowance

Local authorities may pay elected members a vehicle mileage allowance to reimburse costs for travelling by private motor vehicle while on local authority business.

Eligibility for the allowance

A member’s travel is eligible for the allowance if the member:

  • is not provided with a motor vehicle by the local authority,
  • is travelling in a private vehicle,
  • is on loal authority business, and
  • is taking the most direct route that is reasonable in the circumstances.

Allowance payable

The allowance payable to a member for eligible travel in the determination term is based on vehicle type.

The vehicle mileage allowance is based on the kilometre rates for self-employed people and employees published by the Inland Revenue Department on its website as at 7 June 2019.

Petrol or diesel vehicles

The allowance for a petrol or diesel vehicle is 79 cents per kilometre for the first 14,000 kilometres, and 30 cents per kilometre after.

Hybrid petrol vehicles

The allowance for a hybrid petrol vehicle is 79 cents per kilometre for the first 14,000 kilometres, and 19 cents per kilometre after.

Electric vehicle

The allowance for an electric vehicle is 79 cents per kilometre for the first 14,000 kilometres, and 9 cents per kilometre after.
